WATERTOWN, MA April 26, 2001 The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) Boston named Michael McPherson to receive the coveted second annual Fellow Award. The award is a means of recognizing mature designers who have made a significant contribution to raising the standards of excellence in practice and conduct within their regional design community.
Mr. McPherson is a partner and studio head at Corey McPherson Nash (CMN), an integrated design firm providing branding, print, and interactive communications. His work has received numerous national and international design awards from periodicals and professional organizations, including Communication Arts Design Annual, AIGA Book Show, Print Magazine Regional Design Annual, How Magazine International Design Annual (Best of Show 1998), ID Annual Design Awards, the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the University and College Designers Association (UCDA), and the American Association of University Presses Book Show.
Mr. McPherson is a contributor to design and marketing periodicals, including Design Management Journal, ID, and Fine Print. He has served as a juror for a number of design competitions, including the ID Annual Design Awards, CASE, Cincinnati Art Directors Club, and the American Association of University Presses Book and Journal Show. He has been a featured presenter at the Design Management Institute Annual Conference, the Annual CASE Conference, the Annual Conference of the American Association of University Presses, the Boston Art Directors Club, and the AIGA Boston. He is on the Council of Advisors for the Design Management Institute, the Board of Advisors for the Boston Chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Society of Printers. Mr. McPherson has taught at Rhode Island School of Design, Massachusetts College of Art, Art Institute of Boston, and Northeastern University, both on the graduate and undergraduate level. Mr. McPherson's clients include Swarthmore College, Harvard University, Dartmouth College, The Princeton Review, Eastman Kodak, HBO, Oxygen Media, and Nickelodeon.
Before joining CMN in 1987, Mr. McPherson served as design director in the publications office at Northeastern University (1983-87) and as a designer at The MIT Press (1979-83). He has an MFA in graphic design from Rhode Island School of Design and a BA in philosophy from Reed College. The Fellow Award, presented at the Annual Meeting of the AIGA/Boston June 20th, honors an individual who has made significant contributions to the graphic design profession. Only one fellow is awarded in the AIGA Boston chapter every two years. The areas of education, writing, leadership, and reputation as well as the practice of design are given equal consideration in measuring significant contribution. AIGA is the oldest and largest professional association serving designers in the United States. The Boston Chapter has over 900 members and is dedicated to the advancement of excellence and professionalism for designers. Founded in 1914, AIGA serves 15,000 members organized into more than 40 local chapters nationwide and in student groups on 80 campuses, and provides a variety of local and national programs annually.
