WATERTOWN, MASS. November 17, 2003 Michael McPherson, partner and creative director at Corey McPherson Nash (CMN/ http://www.cmndesign.com), an award-winning integrated design firm providing branding, advertising, print and interactive services, will make a presentation entitled, "Redefining Good Design is Good Business," as part of the Association of Registered Graphic Designer's (RGD) upcoming Professional Development Day being held on Monday, Nov. 17, at the National Gallery of Canada, in Ottawa, Canada.

McPherson's presentation, scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST, will highlight how designers add value to business by developing appropriate visual form for brand communications and by developing appealing and intelligible forms for products and environments. While it is often difficult to prove that "good design is good business" using the metrics of return on investment, companies that embrace good design as a way of doing business create value that goes beyond profits. McPherson defines design as a blend of planning, function, semantics and aesthetics, and retraces the history of the relationship between design and business from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day.

"The designer works in the area where the values of business overlap the values of art and culture," said McPherson. "The design process is a dialogue between the client and the designer, between the situation and the form, between reason and intuition. When the two sides of the equation are in balance, the result is good design. I'm very excited about discussing this topic with Association of Registered Graphic Designer's members and believe we'll have a good discussion about the balance of appropriateness and aesthetics."

McPherson's work has received numerous national and international awards. He is a frequent contributor to design and marketing publications, has served as a juror for several distinguished design competitions and has also spoken at the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), University and College Designers Association and the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA). McPherson is on the Advisory Council of the DMI and the Advisory Board of the AIGA Boston and teaches part-time at the Rhode Island School of Design. He is the recipient of the 2001 Fellows Award from AIGA Boston.

The Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD) of Ontario's vision is to drive the continuous development of professional graphic design by shaping the strategic leadership competencies of R.G.D.s to optimize the performance of enterprises and to serve the public in an ethical manner. In 1996, RGD Ontario became the self-regulatory, professional body for graphic designers in the province of Ontario. The Association grants graphic designers who qualify the right to the exclusive use of the designations Registered Graphic Designer and R.G.D. and is the governing and disciplinary body for its members. RGD Ontario is the only graphic design association in Canada to have such legislation.
